A flautist and musical director, António Carrilho is dedicated to interpreting and creating projects that bridge tradition and contemporaneity, exploring new forms of dialogue between eras and artistic languages.
António Carrilho (Portugal) is a recorder player, conceptual creator, pedagogue, and musical director. His artistic work moves between historical performance and contemporary creation, spanning centuries of repertoire from the Middle Ages to the present day, and bridging solo performance, collaborations with specialized ensembles, and the musical direction of projects exploring the expressive diversity of early music and its intersections with today’s artistic languages.
He has appeared as a soloist with leading Portuguese and international orchestras, including Gulbenkian Orchestra, Portuguese Symphony Orchestra, Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, Divino Sospiro, Lisbon Sinfonietta, Os Músicos do Tejo, Haifa Baroque Orchestra (Israel), Nagoya Baroque Orchestra (Japan), Den Norsk Katedralenensemblet (Norway) and Concerto Balabile (Netherlands), among others. His commitment to contemporary creation has led him to premiere dozens of works for recorder – solo, with ensemble, and with orchestra – contributing to the expansion of the instrument’s repertoire and recording part of this artistic journey across various labels.
As a musical director, he collaborates with ensembles such as La Nave Va, La Paix du Parnasse (a member of the Spanish Early Music Association), Syrinx: XXII (a member of Chamber Music America), Borealis Ensemble, and Milles Regretz Ensemble, performing regularly at significant festivals and venues in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. His work as a conductor includes opera productions by Purcell, Charpentier, Pergolesi, Scarlatti, Boismortier, Blow, Salieri, Monteverdi, and Gluck, as well as the world premiere of Cortes de Júpiter, with a text by Gil Vicente and music by Filipe Raposo, at the Belém Cultural Centre (Lisbon).
He has recorded for labels and institutions such as Codax, Encherialis, Numérica, Naxos, Arte France/RTP, Portugaler, mpmp, Dialogos, and the Secretary of Culture of the State of Amazonas, creating a recorded legacy that documents his work between historical repertoire and contemporary creation.
A dedicated pedagogue, he leads the recorder course at the International Music Meetings of Casa de Mateus, where he is co-director, and has been invited to teach courses and masterclasses in Portugal, the Netherlands, Spain, India, Japan, Australia, Brazil, the United States, Germany, and Italy.
